In a historic achievement, Scotland has qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 1998, defeating Denmark 4-2 in a thrilling Group C match where much of the action unfolded in the closing moments.

Anticipation filled the air in Glasgow as Scottish supporters hoped for a memorable showdown. While the team had shown promise in recent European Championships, qualifying for the World Cup had eluded them since France 1998.

The game kicked off with excitement as Scott McTominay scored with a stunning bicycle kick only three minutes in, igniting jubilant cheers from Hampden Park. Denmark countered through Rasmus Hojlund, equalizing the score before Lawrence Shankland put Scotland back in front. The back-and-forth continued when Patrick Dorgu equalized for Denmark in the 82nd minute.

Knowing a draw would mean Denmark clinched first place in the group, Scotland pressed on until the very end. Kieran Tierney scored in stoppage time, sparking an eruption of joy among the home fans. Kenny McLean then sealed the deal with a remarkable chip from halfway that left Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel stunned, confirming Scotland's World Cup qualification.

In reflection, Scotland's head coach Steve Clarke remarked, “This was the chance, one game. This was like a playoff final. We put everything on the line.” Captain Andy Robertson echoed this sentiment, stating, “We put the country through it, but I’m sure it’s worth it. We’re going to the World Cup.”

Although Denmark needed only a draw to qualify for their third consecutive World Cup, they now face a challenging playoff against 11 other second-placed teams for a chance to join Scotland on the global stage.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Scottish football, ensuring the team will represent their nation at the 2026 World Cup, a long-awaited moment for fans.
