Santhakumari, the cherished mother of Malayalam film legend Mohanlal, lovingly departed from this world on Tuesday at her home in Elamakkara, Kochi. She was 90 years old, concluding a life enriched with love, fortitude, and quiet tenacity that spanned nine decades.

Originally hailing from Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta district, Santhakumari relocated to Thiruvananthapuram years ago, alongside her husband Viswanathan Nair, who served the Kerala government as law secretary until his passing. This shift was largely influenced by his professional pursuits.

As a steadfast foundation for her family, Santhakumari supported them through various life stages. Following a stroke, she moved to Kochi with Mohanlal, where she spent her final years in the warmth of family care, celebrating her 90th birthday in August 2025.

Mohanlal has expressed profound respect for his mother, regarding her as an endless source of inspiration and support throughout his journey. Her loving spirit shone during trying times, particularly when she graciously cared for her husband during his memory loss, accompanying him to public events with warmth and love.

He attributes much of his own values of compassion and kindness to her teachings. Observing her patient and benevolent demeanor towards his father deeply influenced his understanding of sustaining meaningful connections and aiding others.

Santhakumari leaves behind her beloved son Mohanlal, a revered figure in Indian cinema, and remembers her elder son Pyarelal, who passed in 2000.

Her death comes shortly after the launch of Mohanlal’s recent film Vrusshabha on December 25, 2025. The family and fans alike mourn the departure of a nurturing and resilient spirit who significantly contributed to the legacy of one of Malayalam cinema’s most cherished icons.

The news of her passing has prompted condolences from fans, peers, and the film community, who reflect on her as not merely a superstar's mother, but as an extraordinary woman in her own right. As Mohanlal and his family navigate their grief, they honor the lasting love and values she imparted.
