Today marks Sania Mirza’s 39th birthday, a milestone she approaches with reflection. When asked about gaining wisdom over the years, she shares, “I’m not sure about being wiser, but I’ve definitely become more patient. I find joy in the little things these days.” Though not one to celebrate extravagantly, she enjoys the warmth of family and friends on her special day. “I prefer to keep things low-key, enjoying some personal time with the people I love,” she states.

Her tone brightens as she talks about her son, Izhaan, whom she co-parents with his father, Shoaib Malik. “I’m immensely proud of the kind-hearted young man he’s becoming. He offers a love that is truly unconditional. In many ways, he’s not only my child but my teacher, helping me evolve as a mother and as a person,” she reveals.

When asked about Izhaan’s interest in sports, she fondly recounts, “Since my pregnancy, it’s been a constant question. He has a natural affinity for sports—football, tennis, swimming, and even drumming. What matters most to me is his enjoyment. I want him to have the freedom to choose his path, just as I was given that freedom growing up.”

Sania reflects positively on her life post-tennis, embracing this new chapter. “The beauty of being an athlete is the early retirement that allows us to explore other passions while still young. I feel incredibly fortunate to step into this phase. We’ve launched a new podcast, I’m diving into pickleball, and I’m also running my own tennis academy. Plus, I’m heavily engaged in mentorship and motivational speaking, which is deeply fulfilling for me,” she explains.

When asked if a comeback to tennis is on her horizon, Sania clarifies, “After dedicating 20 years to being a professional athlete, I firmly knew I was ready to close that chapter in my life. Everyone asked why I didn’t retire during my pregnancy, but I was clear about wanting to return. However, upon retiring this time, I realized I could no longer be the best version of myself in that role. Therefore, a return to tennis is not in my plans.”
