In a major escalation of the conflict, Ukraine experienced a large-scale attack by Russia overnight, leaving three people dead and dozens injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia used around 580 drones and 40 missiles, targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure, factories, and residential areas in several regions.

The Ukrainian president described the strikes as deliberate attempts to terrorize civilians rather than military actions. “All night, Ukraine was under a massive attack by Russia. Every such strike is not a military necessity but a deliberate strategy by Russia to terrorize civilians and destroy our infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said in a statement on the Telegram app.

Impact on Civilians

In the central city of Dnipro, a missile carrying cluster munitions hit a residential apartment building. One person was killed and at least 26 others were injured. Regional officials shared images on social media showing the building with a damaged roof, shattered windows, and people receiving medical care as rescue teams worked at the site.

In the northern Chernihiv region and the western Khmelnytskyi region, two more people were killed. Officials reported additional injuries and damages to local infrastructure.

New Tactics in the Russian Attacks

Military analysts noted a change in Russia’s attack strategy. Instead of using small numbers of drones, Russia now sends swarms of hundreds of drones in a single strike. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully shot down 552 drones and 31 missiles during the night. Air alerts lasted up to 11 hours in some regions, making it a tense and frightening night for citizens.

Polish and allied aircraft were also deployed to protect Polish airspace, as some Russian attacks targeted areas near the border with Poland.

Call for Support from Allies

President Zelenskyy renewed his appeal to Ukraine’s Western allies for more air defense equipment and stronger sanctions on Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine not only defends its own citizens but also helps protect Europe. “Ukraine has proven it can defend itself and Europe, but for a reliable shield, we must act together,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ongoing Conflict

This attack reflects a continuing pattern of escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Civilian areas and infrastructure remain at high risk, and international observers continue to monitor the situation closely. Experts say that supporting Ukraine with air defense systems and imposing pressure on Russia are essential steps to prevent further civilian casualties.
