The Saskatchewan Roughriders secured a 20-13 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS at TD Place on Friday, thanks to a sensational defensive performance highlighted by three interceptions, including Antoine Brooks Jr.’s first career pick-six. The win improves Saskatchewan’s record to 11-4 and marks their first triumph in Ottawa since 2017.
Trevor Harris, Offence Contribute Despite Defensive Focus
While the defence led the charge, the offence capitalized on opportunities. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed 27 of 33 passes for 341 yards and a touchdown, surpassing 4,000 yards for the season. Running back A.J. Ouellette scored for the fifth consecutive game, while Dohnte Meyers caught all six of his targets for 158 yards and a touchdown.
Ottawa’s Quarterback Struggles Continue
The REDBLACKS, fighting for playoff relevance, had a difficult night at quarterback. Dru Brown went 11-for-20 with 141 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Dustin Crum in the third quarter. Crum finished 12-for-16 for 99 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Justin Hardy recorded Ottawa’s only touchdown and is now 63 yards shy of his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.
With the loss, Ottawa is officially eliminated from playoff contention, while the Montreal Alouettes secured a playoff berth and a home game. Saskatchewan can clinch a home playoff date if Calgary defeats BC on Saturday.
Game Summary: Big Defensive Plays Set the Tone
The Roughriders opened the game with a strong 11-play, 84-yard drive, capped by Ouellette’s touchdown. Campbell Fair, filling in for Brett Lauther, missed the convert, leaving the score 6-0. Ottawa briefly found rhythm, but Antoine Brooks Jr.’s 85-yard interception return for a touchdown made it 14-0 after a two-point conversion.
Brown’s struggles continued with back-to-back interceptions, leading to a quarterback change. Crum helped spark a late third-quarter drive, but Ottawa’s field goal attempts continued to falter.
Fourth Quarter Seals the Victory
Saskatchewan regained momentum as Dohnte Meyers scored on a 66-yard slant, extending the lead to 20-3 despite Fair missing another extra point. Ottawa mounted a late drive, with Crum connecting with Hardy for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 20-10. A near-turnover return for a touchdown by Bryce Carter was stopped just short by Ouellette, allowing the Roughriders to maintain control. Harris and Meyers secured the win with key conversions before time expired.
The Roughriders return home to face the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, October 10. Ottawa will meet the Montreal Alouettes on Monday, October 13.
