Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is facing an unprecedented political challenge as Elections Alberta has approved a citizen-led recall petition targeting her seat, along with petitions against two other United Conservative Party MLAs.
In Smith’s Brooks–Medicine Hat riding, local organizer Heather VanSnick is attempting to gather more than 12,000 signatures, arguing that the premier has overlooked community concerns and pushed policies that weaken public services. VanSnick says the recall is necessary because Smith has lost touch with constituents and is prioritizing privatization over public needs.
Smith rejected the criticism, stating she frequently engages with residents through meetings and town halls and uses their feedback to guide government decisions. She is expected to address the matter publicly in a scheduled news conference.
Petitions were also launched against Technology Minister Nate Glubish and Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz, with organizers claiming both MLAs failed to respond to the priorities of their ridings. The ministers maintain they are delivering meaningful outcomes while keeping communication open.
Only one other Alberta premier—William Aberhart in the 1930s—has faced a recall effort, making the current wave of petitions historically significant. The UCP introduced modern recall legislation in 2021, later easing signature requirements earlier this year. However, party leaders warn the recall tool is increasingly being used to challenge policy choices rather than misconduct.
To force a recall vote, petitioners must collect signatures equaling 60% of ballots cast in the riding during the 2023 election. If that threshold is met, voters will decide whether the MLA keeps their seat. A loss would trigger a byelection. The next provincial election is slated for October 18, 2027.
