On Sunday, June 29, 2025, at around 5:30 p.m., the Meadow Lake RCMP were called to a home in Flying Dust First Nation. They were responding to a report that a man was acting aggressively and had a weapon.

When the officers arrived, they saw the man holding a weapon. During the encounter, one officer fired their gun. The man was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital for treatment. His family was informed. No police officers were injured.

Because this was an officer-involved shooting, the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is now investigating. SIRT is a group in Saskatchewan that looks into serious events involving police, to make sure everything was handled correctly. They will review what led up to the shooting and how the officers acted.

At the same time, the RCMP’s own investigative team is also reviewing why the police were called in the first place. This helps ensure a complete understanding of the event leading up to it.

 Why This Matters

  • The SIRT investigation is designed to make sure police act properly and that the event is fully understood.

  • This situation reminds us that when someone has a weapon and behaves violently, police may use force to protect everyone.

  • It’s important that communities and police can feel safe and trust each other, especially in First Nation communities.
