During a spectacular event at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, SS Rajamouli unveiled his highly anticipated film, Varanasi, with notable attendees including Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. While the launch generated buzz, fans quickly noted an intriguing element in the first poster—it notably lacks the names of the lead actors.
The film's three-minute title reveal concludes with the phrase "SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi," listing writer V. Vijayendra Prasad, music director MM Keeravani, and essential crew members. Yet, there’s no mention of the three main stars on either the poster or the title card.
This absence sparked online discussion, prompting many to question the decision to exclude actor names. Longtime followers of Rajamouli noted that this is a conscious artistic choice he has maintained since his Baahubali era. His perspective emphasizes that the film's universe, characters, and storytelling should outshine individual star power. Even the introductions of actors remain unmarked in his films, enhancing immersion and allowing the story to unfold naturally. Actor names only appear in the end credits.
Many fans also pointed out that Rajamouli himself serves as the film's most recognizable global brand, with audiences identifying his films more through his name than the cast involved. His unique vision and storytelling approach have emerged as primary draws, often overshadowing the presence of even major stars.
The title reveal provided the initial glimpses of the film’s characters as well.
Mahesh Babu portrays Rudhra, seen skillfully navigating Varanasi on a bull.
Priyanka Chopra embodies Mandakini, a captivating, gun-wielding figure elegantly draped in a saree.
Prithviraj Sukumaran takes on the role of Kumbha, the antagonist, depicted seated in a wheelchair.
Details on the characters remain scarce, amplifying curiosity about the film’s expansive, multi-era narrative that is said to traverse various continents and centuries. Currently in production, Varanasi is set for a global release on Sankranthi 2027.
