One of the three men from the Quebec City area accused of participating in a terrorist plot has been granted bail. Simon Angers-Audet, 24, was released Friday on the condition that he stays at his family home and regularly updates authorities on his whereabouts.
This decision came after the Quebec Superior Court overturned an earlier ruling that denied him bail. The evidence presented during the bail hearing and the court’s reasoning remain under a publication ban.
Angers-Audet, along with Marc-Aurèle Chabot and Raphaël Lagacé, faces charges related to weapons offenses and facilitating terrorist activities. Authorities allege the group was involved in an anti-government plan to forcibly seize land in the Quebec City region.
Chabot faces an additional charge of instructing others to commit acts for a terrorist organization, a crime that carries a potential life sentence.
A fourth man, Matthew Forbes from Pont-Rouge, Quebec, faces multiple charges including possession of firearms, prohibited devices, explosives, and violations of acts governing military supplies. Forbes was also granted bail, though under strict conditions.
At the time of their arrests on July 8, both Chabot and Forbes were active members of the Canadian Forces stationed at Base Valcartier near Quebec City.
Police investigations revealed that the group engaged in paramilitary training exercises. Court documents also highlighted that Chabot openly expressed intentions to use violence against government officials and made references to another Waco-style confrontation in a podcast before his arrest.
The ongoing case continues to raise concerns about extremist activities and public safety in the region.
