The State of Qatar has reiterated that the acknowledgment of the Nakba is vital to secure a fair, comprehensive, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian conflict.
This announcement was made by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative at the United Nations, during a special session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The session took place at UN headquarters in New York to commemorate the 78th Nakba anniversary.
Sheikha Alya stressed the importance of passing General Assembly Resolution 79/82, expressing pride in Qatar's role as a sponsor of this resolution. She articulated that recognizing the Nakba is a crucial move towards achieving a fair and lasting peace for Palestinians.
She emphasized the need to remember the names of Palestinian children who have lost their lives due to the conflict, asserting that they are victims of an ongoing Nakba whose plight should not be overlooked by the international community.
Qatar denounced Israel's actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, which include reclassifying Palestinian lands as 'state land,' expanding settlements, proposing a death penalty law, and restricting the religious freedoms of Muslims and Christians in occupied Jerusalem.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, the Qatari representative called for a full adherence to the ceasefire agreement and urged the opening of border crossings to facilitate ongoing humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip.
She reaffirmed Qatar's dedication to mediation efforts aimed at peace and underscored the necessity of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
Qatar reiterated its support for the Palestinian cause, grounded in international law and the two-state solution, advocating for an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement further called for an end to Israeli occupation and settlement expansion, cessation of illegal activities in occupied territories, and ensuring the right of return for Palestinian refugees in accordance with international law.
Qatar confirmed its commitment to providing ongoing political, diplomatic, and financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to sustain its humanitarian efforts for Palestinian refugees.
