The Ministry of Municipality in Qatar, through its Livestock Department, has announced the assurance of an adequate supply of both local and imported sheep to satisfy market needs for Eid Al-Adha.
Preparations for the festive period have been meticulously organized via a thorough operational plan focused on ensuring a steady availability of sheep for sacrificial purposes within the local markets. Close coordination is maintained with local breeders, certified import firms, and regulated livestock markets to achieve a balance between supply and demand.
Additionally, the Ministry emphasized its commitment to promoting domestic sheep farming. A collaborative initiative with Widam Food Company and the Ministry of Commerce aims to boost sheep breeding and production among local farmers. This program allows breeders to sell their livestock at competitive rates while benefiting from complimentary concentrated feed support.
As for the imports, operations by Widam Food Company are set to commence on Thursday, May 7. The Ministry is extending technical and material assistance to sheep breeding and fattening projects to enhance local production and address market requirements.
On the import front, the Ministry remains vigilant in monitoring the activities of import companies and the licensing processes, expanding sources based on the health status of exporting nations. Veterinary quarantine facilities are thoroughly equipped to manage the incoming livestock.
The Ministry has insisted that both local and imported livestock adhere to stringent health protocols. Imported sheep undergo rigorous checks encompassing disease monitoring in the exporting nations, adherence to World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) stipulations, as well as quarantine inspections and laboratory assessments upon entry, followed by ongoing market oversight.
Eid sacrifice imports are systematically regulated under a permit scheme, ensuring clarity in health requirements for maintaining a safe and continuous market supply.
Furthermore, the Ministry reiterated its unwavering support for local livestock producers through complimentary veterinary services, subsidized feed, and designated marketing avenues.
Consumers are encouraged to procure Eid sacrifices solely from licensed markets and to verify the health status of the animals, avoiding any signs of illness. The Ministry also urged residents to refrain from unauthorized slaughters to safeguard public health.
