During the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, Qatar's Ministry of Municipality showcased the remarkable strides made by the Qatar Gene Bank in safeguarding genetic resources and ensuring biodiversity.
Held under the theme, "Acting Locally for Global Impact," the celebrations focused on the critical role of biodiversity, ecosystem stability, and sustainable development.
Since its inception in 2012, the Qatar Gene Bank has preserved an impressive 11.37 million seeds, encompassing about 75 percent of Qatar's native plant species. This initiative is pivotal for the protection of Qatar’s rich natural heritage and the preservation of essential plant genetic resources.
The Gene Bank has cataloged 1,404 genetic accessions and successfully conducted over 1,200 field missions throughout Qatar’s nature reserves, aimed at gathering, studying, and conserving plant diversity.
Additionally, it has registered 894 accessions from Qatari genetic resources in globally acknowledged databases, contributing to the worldwide scientific community and collaborative efforts in biodiversity preservation. The facility has also amassed 3,500 herbarium specimens, providing a vital reference for research and environmental analysis.
In its mission to foster local expertise, the Gene Bank has facilitated training for 100 individuals through 20 courses, totaling 600 hours focused on biodiversity conservation and management of genetic resources.
Moreover, Qatar's genetic resources have obtained official registration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, solidifying the nation’s role in global biodiversity protection efforts, genetic resource conservation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Through these accomplishments, the Qatar Gene Bank embodies the country’s dedication to environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and ensuring food security for generations to come.
