In an impactful humanitarian effort, Qatar Charity (QC) has provided essential food baskets to countless vulnerable families in Chad amid the nation's growing food insecurity crisis.
Targeting the hardest-hit communities around the capital, N'Djamena, this initiative has directly aided approximately 14,000 individuals through the distribution of 2,000 comprehensive food baskets.
The distribution was strategically executed across four crucial areas surrounding N'Djamena, ensuring that 500 baskets were allocated to each site to reach the most at-risk families effectively. Each basket comprises fundamental provisions intended to sustain household needs for several weeks.
This initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity, and Humanitarian Affairs, through its Social Solidarity Department and field teams. Such partnerships have enabled targeted beneficiary identification and efficient distribution processes.
This intervention is particularly timely, given the alarming rise in food insecurity across Chad, a nation that is part of the crisis-laden Sahel region. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that millions are currently grappling with various degrees of food insecurity.
According to the 2025 Global Hunger Index, hunger levels in Chad are categorized as "serious." The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) indicates that between 1.5 to 2 million people may require immediate food assistance during the lean season spanning from June to September, a period marked by dwindling household food supplies and soaring food prices.
The ongoing food crisis stems from multiple factors, including recurrent droughts and floods, insufficient agricultural yields, prevalent poverty, alongside the ramifications of displacement and regional refugee movements.
Health issues are a significant concern, particularly as over 30% of children under five years old are experiencing stunting due to chronic malnutrition, presenting a persistent structural challenge that transcends immediate emergency needs.
Through this vital initiative, Qatar Charity strives to assist the most impacted families, aiming to alleviate the adverse consequences arising from the intensifying food insecurity situation in Chad.
