Qatar has reasserted that the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters is pivotal in upholding international law. The nation underscored that effective dialogue, adherence to legal frameworks, and fostering good relations between neighboring states are crucial for addressing global challenges and mitigating their adverse effects.
This declaration was made by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a high-level United Nations Security Council debate concerning the safety of maritime routes.
She pointed out that the current discourse is particularly urgent amid escalating threats to international waterways that transcend traditional issues. These emerging risks undermine global peace, security, and economic stability, notably in crucial channels like the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatar reiterated that freedom of navigation is enshrined as a core principle in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It also referenced UN Security Council Resolution 552 (1984), which urges all nations to uphold the principle of free movement in international waters and safeguard the territorial integrity of coastal countries.
On the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar stressed the necessity of adhering to UN Security Council Resolution 2817. This resolution, brought forth by Bahrain on behalf of GCC member states and Jordan, condemned attacks against Qatar and neighboring nations, labeling them as violations of international law and threats to global stability.
Furthermore, the resolution cautioned against any actions that could hinder navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting that such measures could pose significant dangers to international security and trade.
Qatar also advocated for the protection of maritime routes and global supply chains by adhering to international law. The nation welcomed mediation efforts from Pakistan that contributed to a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, emphasizing the critical nature of honoring this ceasefire to foster a constructive environment for dialogue and ensure safe navigation in vital waterways.
In conclusion, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to diplomatic approaches and peaceful initiatives, stating that dialogue, adherence to international law, and cooperation among nations are fundamental to sustaining global stability and maritime safety.
