Tragedy at Pulau Pangkor: Three More Bodies Recovered

Following the tragic capsizing of a migrant boat near Pulau Pangkor, search teams have intensified efforts and recovered three additional bodies from the waters. Authorities in Malaysia have confirmed these victims were likely undocumented Indonesian migrants who were attempting the perilous journey to Malaysia. This latest recovery increases the total confirmed fatalities to 30, as the search continues for the remaining missing individuals.

According to DSP Mazre Che Mahmod, an officer from Marine Police Region One Operations Command, these bodies were located by the Royal Malaysian Navy vessel KD Sri Indera Sakti approximately 20 nautical miles from where the incident occurred. The discovery was made around 6 pm during ongoing efforts near Pulau Pangkor and Lumut in the state of Perak.

Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the identities of the recently found victims. It is believed they were part of a group of undocumented Indonesian migrants who had embarked on a hazardous journey from Kisaran, Indonesia, to Malaysia. Reports indicate that the boat had set sail on May 9, before capsizing in Malaysian waters on Monday.

The incident has sent shockwaves through local communities and sparked concerns about the dangers associated with illegal migration routes between Indonesia and Malaysia. Officials indicate that there were around 37 people on board the vessel when it capsized, with 23 individuals having been rescued alive since the rescue operation commenced on May 11.

On Wednesday morning, the third day of the search and rescue mission began with significant efforts from various Malaysian agencies. The operation includes the Marine Police, the Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. Teams are employing marine vessels, patrol boats, and aerial support to comb extensive areas of the sea for those still unaccounted for.

Assets deployed in this operation include two Marine Police boats, three Royal Malaysian Navy ships, and three units from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, including KM Malawali, BENTENG 1203, and a Bombardier CL415MP aircraft from the Subang Air Station. Though the challenging sea conditions have complicated rescue operations, teams remain determined to find all missing individuals.

This tragic event has once again brought to light the perilous risks faced by undocumented migrants daring to undertake hazardous sea voyages in search of better lives. Malaysian authorities are coordinating rescue efforts while also looking into the factors that contributed to this illegal journey.
