The New England Patriots stunned the Buffalo Bills 23-20 on Sunday night, snapping the Bills’ 14-game home winning streak in a dramatic showdown at Highmark Stadium. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye orchestrated a game-winning drive in the final minutes, while wide receiver Stefon Diggs delivered a standout performance in his emotional return to Buffalo.
With 2:12 remaining, the Patriots began a 37-yard drive from their own 29-yard line. Maye, under pressure from defensive lineman DaQuan Jones, executed a clutch 12-yard catch-and-run to Diggs to keep the drive alive. The march ended with rookie kicker Andy Borregales’ 52-yard field goal with just 15 seconds remaining, sealing New England’s victory.
Maye, making his first NFL prime-time start, completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and delivered his first career game-winning drive. His connection with Diggs was central to the Patriots’ success, highlighted by a 32-yard improvisational fourth-quarter sideline throw that set up a go-ahead touchdown.
Diggs, who played for Buffalo from 2020 to 2023 before being traded to the Houston Texans in April 2024 and later joining the Patriots, finished with 10 catches for 146 yards. He became the first Patriots receiver since Julian Edelman in 2019 to post consecutive 100-yard games in a single season. Reflecting on the return to his former home stadium, Diggs said, “It was lit. Electrifying. They love you one day, they hate you the next, they can love you again. I spent a lot of time here. I respect the dynamic.”
The Patriots’ scoring came early in the third quarter, when Maye found Diggs on a 32-yard play, setting up a touchdown that gave New England a 13-10 lead. They extended it with another Maye-to-Diggs connection for a 30-yard gain that led to a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, building a 20-10 advantage before the Bills rallied to tie it.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel praised the duo’s performance: “Being able to emotionally come back here for Stef and seeing Drake grow and lead the team — that was a really gutty performance.”
The win improved the Patriots to 3-2, while Buffalo, winners of the last five AFC East titles, dropped to 4-1. The victory showcased Maye’s poise and Diggs’ veteran leadership, signaling a potential new era for the Patriots’ offense.
