After a devastating suicide blast in northwestern Pakistan resulted in the deaths of 15 police officers, Pakistan has officially expressed its concerns to Afghanistan. Authorities allege that militants connected with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) orchestrated the attack from Afghan soil. This incident further strains the relationships between Islamabad and Kabul amid ongoing security dilemmas along their shared border.
On Monday, the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan summoned an Afghan diplomat to deliver a formal protest regarding the incident. The ministry indicated that investigations and intelligence gathered post-attack pointed towards a plot devised by militants based in Afghanistan. Pakistan has warned it retains the option of taking significant action against those implicated in the incident. Afghan authorities have yet to respond to these accusations.
The tragic incident unfolded late Saturday in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan. Local law enforcement reported that a suicide bomber crashed an explosives-laden vehicle near a police post, triggering a violent detonation. Following the blast, an armed confrontation ensued, leading to immediate casualties among police personnel, while further structural damage caused additional fatalities. Reports indicate that at least four officers sustained injuries during the turmoil.
A newly formed group, Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for the bombing. Islamabad suspects this faction has close ties to the Pakistani Taliban. The TTP has been increasingly implicated in targeting law enforcement, military, and governmental entities in recent years. Islamabad has continuously accused the Afghan Taliban regime of providing refuge to these militants, though Kabul rejects such assertions.
Additionally, a separate security incident occurred on the same day in a remote village adjacent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As reported by police, a suspect inadvertently detonated explosives during an encounter with a local resident named Mohammad Liaquat, who had become suspicious of the individual approaching a security post. The suspect, caught off guard, detonated himself, resulting in Liaquat's death.
Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, commended Liaquat's courageous actions, stating that his intervention likely saved numerous lives. The minister hailed him as a heroic figure who sacrificed himself to thwart a potential larger assault. Community members have echoed similar sentiments, honoring Liaquat's bravery. Security forces have since intensified patrols in surrounding areas following these events.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated over recent months amid a surge in militant activity and border skirmishes.
