In a distressing incident that has garnered national attention, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has condemned the racial assault resulting in the death of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma from Tripura. Anjel and his brother Michael faced a vicious attack in Dehradun, inflicted by assailants wielding knives and blunt objects. Gandhi referred to this act as a "horrific hate crime" and pointed fingers at the ruling BJP for propagating narratives that foster hatred, particularly among younger generations.
Anjel sustained grave injuries, including stab wounds to his neck and abdomen, ultimately succumbing to them on December 26. His brother, Michael, also suffered injuries, including a head wound. The tragic attack occurred on December 9 near Selaqui, Dehradun, where the brothers had gone for errands.
According to law enforcement, the violence erupted after an argument involving the Chakma brothers, a local group, and another individual who directed racial insults at them. In retaliation to the abuse, violence ensued, leading to Anjel being fatally stabbed and Michael sustaining a blunt force injury to his head.
In the wake of this attack, authorities apprehended five suspects, including two minors who were placed in a reform home. One suspect, a Nepalese national, remains at large, with a Rs 25,000 reward announced for information to aid in his capture. The police have liaised with Nepali authorities in a bid to locate him.
The tragic event has sparked significant outrage across Tripura and the Northeast, with numerous student organizations and local groups demanding severe punishment for those involved. They are also urging the Central Government to enact decisive measures to combat ongoing racial discrimination faced by Northeastern youth in India.
Rahul Gandhi offered his condolences, stating, "India is founded on principles of respect and unity, not fear or violence." He further emphasized the need for collective reflection on the growing intolerance in society.
Bipin Debbarma, the BJP state General Secretary in Tripura, expressed sorrow over Anjel's demise, assuring that the Tripura Chief Minister is coordinating with his counterpart in Uttarakhand to ensure justice is served.
This incident underscores the urgent need to tackle racial discrimination and safeguard the rights and dignity of all citizens, especially those from Northeast India residing elsewhere.
