Ottawa Weather Snow Warning Sunday Winter Chill

Post by : Mina Carter

Ottawa residents are in for a mix of chilly temperatures, changing skies, and the possibility of snowfall as the weekend approaches. After a wet Wednesday that brought 7.7 mm of rain, Environment Canada forecasts a break from the rain today, but with overnight lows dipping below freezing, making it feel distinctly winter-like.

Thursday: Cloudy Skies Clear by Noon

According to the forecast, Thursday will begin mainly cloudy, with skies expected to clear around midday. Early morning flurries are possible, adding a wintry touch to the otherwise wet week. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 3°C during the day.

The night will turn clear, but residents should prepare for colder conditions. Overnight lows are forecast to drop to -5°C, with wind chills making it feel like -8°C. This is well below the seasonal normal low of -1°C, signaling a significant cold snap for the city.

Friday: Cloudy with Chance of Rain

Friday’s forecast calls for cloudy conditions, with a 40 per cent chance of showers in the morning. Rain periods are expected to continue into the afternoon, pushing temperatures up slightly to a high of 9°C. While the day will be relatively mild compared to Thursday night, damp conditions are expected, making it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests.

Saturday: A Mix of Sun and Clouds

Saturday will bring some relief for residents hoping for clearer skies. Environment Canada predicts a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures peaking at 7°C. This is closer to seasonal norms and may offer a chance for outdoor activities, though mornings and evenings will still carry a crisp chill.

Sunday: Snow and Flurries Possible

Sunday’s forecast is less certain but potentially impactful. Ottawa is expected to experience cloudy skies with a 60 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers. Highs are expected to remain around 3°C, bringing the city closer to winter-like conditions.

Environment Canada has issued a significant weather outlook, warning that Ottawa, along with parts of southern and northeastern Ontario, could see 5 to 15 cm of snow on Sunday. Officials caution that confidence in this forecast is low due to variable weather conditions, but residents are advised to prepare for potential snow accumulation and plan travel accordingly.

For early November, Ottawa’s normal high is 7°C, with a low of -1°C. This week’s weather has fluctuated around these averages, with Wednesday seeing a rainfall accumulation of 7.7 mm. Thursday night’s temperatures, dropping below the normal low, are among the first signs of winter settling in.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates, as conditions could change rapidly, particularly with the upcoming snow potential. Clothing appropriate for cold, windy, and wet conditions is advised for those venturing outdoors.

With mixed precipitation expected, including rain, flurries, and possible snow, city services may need to respond to slippery roads and reduced visibility conditions. Ottawa residents should anticipate slower traffic, plan for extra commuting time, and ensure proper winter safety measures are in place.

As winter approaches, this weekend’s weather could serve as a reminder for citizens to prepare early for the colder months, including snow removal, winter tires, and emergency supplies for travel or outdoor activities.
