Ottawa braces for frigid temps and 10 cm of snow this week

Post by : Mina Carter

While much of southern Ontario is being hit hard by an early winter lake-effect snowstorm, Ottawa has largely avoided the heaviest snowfall. However, the city is far from free of harsh winter conditions, with temperatures set to plunge over the coming days.

Sunday’s high is expected to reach around 0°C, but as the week progresses, Environment Canada forecasts daytime temperatures remaining below freezing. By Thursday night, Ottawa could experience a bitter -13°C, making it one of the coldest stretches of the season so far.

The bitter cold will be amplified by strong winds. Southwest gusts of up to 50 km/h are expected during the day on Sunday, later shifting to come from the northwest with similar intensity after midnight. Although winds may ease slightly on Monday, wind chill factors could make it feel like -14°C in the early morning hours, posing added risks for outdoor activities and travel.

Snowfall is also expected in the region. Ottawa may receive between 5 and 10 cm of snow by the end of Sunday, although conditions remain unpredictable. Areas across eastern Ontario, particularly along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, could see snow briefly turning to rain before reverting to snow again.

Authorities are advising residents to stay alert. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding drivers to prepare for rapidly changing road conditions and to adjust their speed and driving habits to ensure safety.

With frigid temperatures, gusty winds, and accumulating snow, Ottawa residents are being urged to bundle up, take precautions while traveling, and monitor local weather updates for any sudden changes.
