7 More In Ontario Told To Isolate Considered low-Risk Hantavirus Contacts

Ontario health officials have asked seven additional people to self-isolate after they were identified as possible low-risk contacts connected to the international hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. The Ontario Ministry of Health said the individuals are being monitored carefully as a precaution, although authorities believe the overall risk to the public remains low.

The latest update comes as health agencies in several countries continue tracing passengers and contacts connected to the luxury expedition cruise ship, where multiple hantavirus infections and deaths were reported in recent weeks. The outbreak has already triggered global monitoring efforts because the Andes strain of hantavirus involved in the cases is rare and can spread through close human contact in limited situations.

Ontario officials said the seven newly identified individuals are considered “low-risk” contacts, meaning they did not have direct or prolonged exposure to confirmed infected patients. Even so, health authorities are asking them to remain in isolation and monitor themselves for symptoms during the incubation period. So far, none of the individuals have reported symptoms connected to the virus.

Canadian health officials have been responding cautiously since the outbreak first gained international attention earlier this month. Several Canadians were reportedly passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship or travelled on flights connected to infected individuals. Earlier reports confirmed that some Canadians in Ontario and Quebec had already been advised to isolate as a safety measure after possible exposure.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has described the overall risk to the general population as low. Officials explained that the Andes virus does not spread easily between people and usually requires close and prolonged contact with an infected person. Experts also noted that hantavirus infections are more commonly linked to contact with infected rodents or their droppings.

The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius became a major international concern after several passengers became seriously ill during the voyage. According to global health reports, multiple confirmed infections and at least three deaths have been linked to the outbreak. Health agencies across Europe, North America and other regions are now continuing contact tracing and monitoring travellers connected to the ship.

Ontario health authorities said they are working closely with federal and international agencies to track possible contacts and provide updated guidance when necessary. Officials also stressed that the isolation requests are precautionary and are part of broader efforts to prevent any possible spread of the virus inside Canada.
