Through its persistent diplomatic engagement, Oman has successfully secured the release of nine Filipino sailors who had been detained in Yemen for several months following the sinking of their vessel, the MV Eternity C, in the Red Sea earlier this year. Their transfer to Omani authorities represents a significant milestone in a complicated situation that began in mid-2025.
The successful resolution emerged from ongoing collaboration between the Omani government and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, as detailed by the Omani news source Atheer. Officials from the Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office in Muscat are currently organizing travel arrangements and logistics for the sailors' return.
This situation first gained broader diplomatic attention in July when Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro discussed it with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. A subsequent call in November was crucial in reviving communication channels, facilitating negotiations with Yemeni authorities.
After various discreet engagements, the sailors were formally handed over to Omani care and safely evacuated from Yemen. Their repatriation is expected to proceed swiftly, with families in the Philippines already notified.
This successful outcome highlights Oman’s increasing role as an impartial mediator in regional challenges. By maintaining consistent communication in complex conflict settings, Muscat has once again played a pivotal role in alleviating humanitarian burdens and fostering peaceful resolutions.
