The National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) in Oman has introduced a new publication named "Oman-Russia Relations in the Nineteenth Century AD – A Documentary Study Based on Russian Archives." This initiative aligns with NRAA’s commitment to enhancing Omani and Arab scholarship through meticulously documented historical materials while supporting research centered on Oman’s diplomatic legacy.

Featuring 2,852 Russian documents—spanning official correspondence, reports, memoranda, maps, and visuals—the book provides a comprehensive overview of the 19th-century interactions between Oman and Russia, underscoring the strategic relevance of Omani ports in international commerce and maritime ventures.

The work is compartmentalized into three core chapters that outline the evolution of diplomatic and trade relationships, scrutinize Russian involvement in the Gulf, and depict Oman’s political, economic, and social landscape during this period. Additionally, it contains more than 50 rare archival documents from Russia, along with thorough indices designed to aid researchers in navigating the findings.

Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Dhoyani, NRAA's Chairman, expressed that this publication illustrates Oman’s pivotal historical contributions alongside the importance of Russian documentation in comprehending global relations. The author, Dr. Dharar Mohammed Fadhl Al Mawla, remarked that a decade was spent in translating and confirming these records, offering novel insights into Oman’s historical narrative that extend beyond British and French documentation.

Dr. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al Jahwari, Director Specialist for Documentary Studies, emphasized that this publication is the first to present Russian archival resources to Arabic-speaking academics. Spanning from 1792 to 1917, the study emphasizes Oman’s escalating political and economic ties with Russia and its crucial role in historical trade frameworks.

This book provides scholars with a refreshing perspective on Oman’s global history while supporting the authority’s objective of ensuring access to worldwide historical records for the Arab academic community, all while upholding stringent academic criteria.
