Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, is poised to reveal plans aimed at bolstering the country's nuclear capabilities during a crucial party meeting, as reported by state media. This follows his oversight of the latest missile launches, which have intensified regional tensions.
He has mandated the “expansion” and modernization of missile production facilities, indicating a committed move towards enhancing the nation’s strategic weaponry. Specifics regarding these initiatives are anticipated to be disclosed at the forthcoming ninth Communist Party congress, marking its first gathering since 2021.
During the congress, the ruling party will launch a new five-year agenda that focuses on defense and economic advancements. Kim pointed out that the successful test of a large-caliber multiple rocket launcher represents a critical leap in strengthening their strategic deterrent capabilities. He noted its new ability for accurate and targeted strikes.
The recent tests successfully hit targets at a distance of 358.5 kilometers, aimed towards the Sea of Japan. According to reports, some missiles landed beyond North Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone. South Korean forces documented multiple short-range ballistic missiles fired from the region north of Pyongyang in that direction.
Kim cautioned that these advancements would inflict “severe psychological distress” on any military forces seeking to provoke conflict with North Korea. Analysts believe the new rocket system may integrate sophisticated guidance technologies meant to counteract GPS disruptions, thus enhancing precision.
The test was notable for the presence of Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, alongside senior missile officials, underscoring the importance of these military strides. Despite developmental hurdles, Kim has hailed the test as a pivotal progression in fortifying North Korea's strategic defenses.
