Nawazuddin Siddiqui Discusses the Significance of Indie Films in India

Post by : Mina Carter

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a key figure in Indian independent cinema, is renowned for his roles in celebrated films such as The Lunchbox, Photograph, and Gangs of Wasseypur. During a recent discussion, the 51-year-old actor shared his views on the struggles that indie films encounter in India, where larger commercial productions often overshadow these creative endeavors.

Reflecting on the direction of independent cinema, Nawazuddin stated, “I’ll keep supporting indie films. It's essential to maintain a balance with certain types of mainstream productions. It would be detrimental if independent cinema were to decline. We must continue these projects... Our classical arts, whether it’s music or dance, have never had mass appeal since they can only be appreciated by a few.”

The actor noted that despite the important role of commercial films in the industry, indie films serve a special purpose as “classical art forms” meant for specific audiences. He further elucidated, “If you aim to reach the masses artistically, that’s one thing. But if your goal is purely mass appeal, then certain elements must be included. The essence of pure art and classical narratives was never intended for everyone,” he clarified.

Nawazuddin also pointed out the positive aspects of participating in mainstream films. He indicated that larger productions offer broader visibility, ultimately benefiting independent films. “The main advantage of big films is the audience size. If indie films manage to capture even five percent of that audience, it’s a major victory. My visibility increased significantly because of these films. Typically, indie films see limited releases and screens, leading to lower viewership,” he remarked.

Currently, he is drawing acclaim for his portrayal of a vampire in Aditya Sarpotdar’s horror comedy Thamma, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. Part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, Nawazuddin plays the antagonist in a film that has received favorable reviews since its Diwali launch. Notably, Thamma grossed ₹93 crore at the box office in merely four days, underlining the rising popularity of genre films in India.

By balancing roles in both independent and mainstream cinema, Nawazuddin Siddiqui advocates for unique storytelling while leveraging his star appeal to give indie films the recognition they merit, effectively illustrating that artistic integrity and commercial success can thrive together in today’s film industry.
