Nathalie Baye, an acclaimed French actress renowned for her dynamic performances, has died at the age of 77 in Paris. Reports indicate she succumbed to a neurodegenerative disease on Friday, as confirmed by her family.
French President Emmanuel Macron honored her legacy, stating she was an actor with whom audiences “loved, dreamed, and grew.” On X, he reflected on how Baye's voice, smile, and warmth made her a significant figure in French cinema for many years, collaborating with renowned directors like François Truffaut and Tonie Marshall.
Over her illustrious five-decade career, Baye graced more than 80 films, effortlessly transitioning between mainstream comedies and serious dramas. She received the prestigious César Award twice for Best Actress, France’s equivalent to the Oscars.
She captured international fame for her role as Leonardo DiCaprio's mother in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can. One of her most lauded performances came in Venus Beauty Institute, a romantic comedy that won Tonie Marshall a César in 2000.
From an artistic lineage, Baye initially trained as a dancer, later pursuing acting at Cours Simon and the Conservatoire. She gained prominence with her role in Truffaut’s Day for Night (1973) and reunited with him for The Green Room (1978).
Baye worked alongside various prominent directors such as Maurice Pialat, Claude Sautet, Bertrand Tavernier, and Xavier Beauvois. Her notable breakthrough role was in The Return of Martin Guerre (1982), and she won a César for her impactful portrayal in La Balance (1983) as a resilient streetwalker.
In 2006, she received her third César for Best Actress for her exceptional role in The Young Lieutenant, directed by Xavier Beauvois.
