Nandani Sharma Makes WPL History with Stunning Hat-Trick

Post by : Bianca Hayes

On Sunday, Nandani Sharma of the Delhi Capitals made her mark in women's cricket history by becoming the first Indian fast bowler to secure a hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The 24-year-old showcased her incredible talent during a match against the Gujarat Giants in Navi Mumbai, although her remarkable feat couldn't save her team from a heartbreaking loss.

With impressive figures of 5 for 33, she delivered one of the standout bowling performances of this season. This accomplishment places her alongside an elite group of WPL bowlers who have also claimed a hat-trick, including the likes of Issy Wong, Grace Harris, and Deepti Sharma.

The historic moment unfolded in the 20th over of Gujarat's innings, where Nandani dismissed Kanika Ahuja, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Renuka Singh consecutively, sparking excitement within the Delhi Capitals camp.

Nandani Sharma's Background

Born in 2001 in Chandigarh, Nandani has emerged as a promising pace bowler through her consistent performances in India’s domestic circuit. Competing for Chandigarh in various tournaments, she has impressed selectors with her skills while representing the North Zone Women in inter-zonal matches.

Her talent was recognized when the Delhi Capitals acquired her for Rs 20 lakh at the WPL 2026 auction, a move that is now proving to be a brilliant decision.

Nandani's Reflections Post-Match

After the match, Nandani expressed her gratitude towards her captain Jemimah Rodrigues and opener Shafali Verma for their unwavering support during tense moments.

“My focus was on targeting my bowling. Shafali and Jemimah reassured me before each ball, telling me to aim for the stumps. A hat-trick wasn’t in my expectations, but they believed I could get wickets,” she noted.

She also mentioned a crucial adjustment during her spell.

“After my first over, I realized the batters were picking up my stock ball easily, so I opted for my variations. Fortunately, it paid off. My brother, mother, and a close friend were in the stands, while the rest of my family watched from home. Their support is everything to me.”

Delhi Capitals Fall Short Despite Stellar Performance

Despite Nandani’s heroics, Delhi Capitals could not clinch a victory. The Gujarat Giants edged out a thrilling four-run win, driven by Sophie Devine's remarkable 95 and a composed final over that sealed the deal.

This win marked the Gujarat Giants’ second consecutive victory, while it was the second loss of the season for Delhi Capitals.

Even in defeat, the night was undoubtedly a celebration for Nandani Sharma, whose performance signaled her arrival on women’s cricket's grand stage.
