Celebrity makeup artist Namita Soni has opened up about the mounting struggles brides face regarding their makeup expectations, which have become increasingly skewed due to the influence of social media. Recognized for her work with Bollywood icons such as Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Soni recently discussed her experiences while preparing Netra Mantena for her lavish wedding to Vamsi Gadiraju at the stunning Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur on November 23.
Soni pointed out that today's brides often find themselves uncertain about their desired looks and depend heavily on mood boards to visualize their bridal aesthetics. “I usually create mood boards—sometimes as many as six for one outfit,” she said. For each desired look, Soni curates several makeup and hairstyle options that complement the bride's attire. Despite her meticulous planning, she notes that expectations frequently remain out of reach.
According to Soni, platforms like Instagram and Pinterest significantly shape these heightened expectations. Many brides present her with images that have been heavily filtered and edited, asking to replicate looks that are unrealistic in real life. “They bring me these ‘no-makeup’ images, and I have to remind them, ‘This has 18 filters! I can’t achieve this,’” she stated. Soni emphasized that natural skin features texture, pores, and imperfections, and while she can enhance a bride’s look, she cannot recreate a digital filter's effect.
Moreover, she noted that some brides feel disappointed when their appearance does not mirror the filtered images they provide. The tendency for over-editing and digital beautification leads to frustration when reality fails to align with expectations. “Brides often edit their own photos; they face-tune and overcorrect,” she described. Adding to this challenge, Soni observed that family members frequently make comments or suggest changes post-makeup, complicating the experience further.
Trust is essential for a successful bridal makeup experience, according to Soni. Once a bride places her trust in her, Soni believes she can perform her best work and deliver a breathtaking, customized look. She shared her experiences with high-profile celebrities, describing Sushmita Sen as “dynamic and amazing” and confessing that she has a “biggest girl crush” on her. Her collaborations with stars like Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Janhvi Kapoor, and Malaika Arora have taught her the significance of understanding personality and authenticity, instead of adhering to unattainable standards.
Namita Soni’s observations shed light on an escalating concern within the wedding and beauty markets: social media's pressure often distorts perceptions of beauty, leading to unrealistic expectations. Her message to brides is clear—embrace your natural beauty, have faith in your makeup artist, and focus on accentuating your best features rather than chasing a filtered fantasy.
