UAE Team Emirates-XRG's António Morgado delivered a spectacular performance at the Trofeo Calvià on Wednesday, the opening event of the Challenge Mallorca. Amidst challenging rain-soaked conditions, Morgado joined a leading breakaway and out-sprinted Spain’s Héctor Álvarez in Palmanova.
The race presented a series of short and steep climbs that initially took a toll on the peloton. A formidable lead was established by Adrien Boichis (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility), and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), who stretched their advantage to over 90 seconds before the second-to-last climb.
With 33 kilometers left, Morgado executed a pivotal attack in the inclement weather. Héctor Álvarez managed to keep pace and joined him in pursuit of the front three. By the time they reached the Coll de sa Gramola climb, the five riders were together at the front.
As they approached the final ascent, Coll de Soma, Álvarez made the first move, but Morgado quickly matched his pace, leaving the two in a neck-and-neck race to the finish. They were unable to shake each other off, resulting in an exhilarating sprint where Morgado secured the top spot.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG had a strong overall performance, with Nils Politt finishing eighth and Rune Herregodts ninth, showcasing a promising start to their season.
