The Montreal Port Authority has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Julie Gascon, has stepped down from her position with immediate effect. The decision was confirmed in a late statement on Friday, but no official reason was provided for her sudden departure.
Gascon had taken over the leadership of the organization less than two years ago, and there had been no public indication that she was planning to leave. Her abrupt exit suggests that the board may have been seeking a change in leadership at a critical time for the port’s future development.
In the interim, a committee made up of members from the board of directors, along with senior management, will oversee the operations of the port until a new CEO is appointed. This leadership change also follows another recent departure, as former chief commercial officer Paul Bird left the organization last month to join a high-speed rail project.
The Montreal Port Authority manages one of Canada’s busiest and most important ports, playing a key role in trade and transportation across the country. The organization is currently focused on a major expansion project, which includes building a new container terminal in Contrecoeur, located about 40 kilometres from Montreal.
This expansion project is valued at approximately $2.3 billion and has been identified as a national priority by the federal government. The project aims to strengthen supply chains and improve access to key markets in Quebec, Ontario, and parts of the United States. Both the federal and Quebec governments have already committed significant funding, while the Canada Infrastructure Bank has also pledged financial support.
Additionally, global logistics company DP World has been selected to develop and operate the new terminal’s land-based facilities for the next 40 years. However, the final financial structure for the project is still being completed.
Despite the leadership change, the port authority is expected to continue moving forward with its expansion plans, which are seen as essential for supporting future economic growth and trade in the region.
