Mexico has issued a strong diplomatic warning to the United States after discovering unauthorized American involvement in an anti-drug operation in the northern state of Chihuahua. The incident has increased tensions between the two countries over security cooperation and sovereignty.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her government sent a formal diplomatic note to Washington, stating that such actions must not happen again. She said Mexican authorities were not informed about the participation of U.S. officials in the operation, which later came to light after a tragic accident.
The issue surfaced following a car crash on April 19 that killed four officials — two from the United States and two from Mexico. Reports suggested that the American individuals involved were linked to intelligence operations, though they did not have proper authorization to take part in security activities inside Mexico.
According to Mexico’s security cabinet, the U.S. personnel lacked formal accreditation, and one of them had reportedly entered the country as a tourist. This has raised serious concerns about violations of Mexico’s laws and procedures related to national security operations.
President Sheinbaum emphasized that while her government supports cooperation with the United States in tackling organized crime, it must strictly follow Mexican law. She reiterated that intelligence sharing is acceptable, but direct involvement of foreign agents in operations on Mexican soil is not.
The situation has highlighted ongoing tensions between the two nations regarding how to handle drug cartels. While Mexico insists on maintaining full control over its internal security operations, U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump, have previously pushed for stronger and more direct action against cartel groups, including the possible use of military force.
This latest development underlines the delicate balance in U.S.-Mexico relations, where cooperation is essential but must respect national sovereignty. Mexican authorities have made it clear that future collaboration must follow established legal frameworks to avoid similar incidents.
