Dr. Salhab noted that while matcha is beneficial, excessive consumption or drinking it at incorrect times can hinder iron absorption. He emphasized that matcha's polyphenols—potent compounds derived from plants—can impede the absorption of non-heme iron, which is primarily found in plant foods like spinach, beans, and legumes. For those relying heavily on these sources for iron, consuming matcha too closely to mealtime may diminish the body's capacity to absorb this vital mineral.
Fortunately, Dr. Salhab reassured matcha enthusiasts that they don’t need to abandon it altogether. Instead, he proposed straightforward adjustments to mitigate the impact. First, steer clear of matcha during meals or soon after eating; delaying intake for at least one to two hours allows for better iron absorption. Additionally, pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C sources—like oranges, strawberries, and bell peppers—can further enhance iron uptake.
He also encouraged cooking iron-rich plant foods whenever possible, as cooked vegetables can be more effectively absorbed than raw ones. Individuals who are already experiencing low iron levels or are at higher risk of deficiency should consider limiting matcha to just a single cup each day, avoiding consumption near mealtimes.
Lastly, he highlighted the importance of regularly monitoring iron levels, especially among women, vegetarians, vegans, and those who frequently feel fatigued. Early detection is essential to prevent complications such as anemia.
