A magnificent Purple Star Sapphire, weighing an astonishing 3,563 carats, has been showcased in the capital of Sri Lanka. This gem, known as the “Star of Pure Land,” is believed to be the largest of its type ever documented, gaining international attention due to its immense size and distinctive features.
Crafted into a flawless round shape, it showcases a remarkable six-rayed asterism — a star pattern that becomes visible when light strikes its surface. This extraordinary characteristic distinguishes it from other star sapphires. Renowned gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe asserted its unique stature, stating, “This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind, exhibiting a beautifully defined six-ray star.”
Unearthed in 2023 from a gem-rich area near Rathnapura, also termed the “city of gems,” the sapphire was acquired along with other precious stones. Over a span of almost two years, its true value and uniqueness were fully acknowledged, leading to its certification by two independent gemological institutions.
The owners, opting for anonymity due to security considerations, have estimated the gem's worth between $300 million and $400 million, as per evaluations by international experts. Sri Lankan sapphires are renowned for their vivid hues, clarity, and inherent brilliance, further elevating this gem’s prestige.
The “Star of Pure Land” is now poised to hit the market, anticipated to be a landmark acquisition for collectors and investors alike.
