In a significant step for clean energy, Masdar and OMV have officially launched a joint venture to create a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyser plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. This initiative is one of the largest in Europe, focusing on generating renewable hydrogen aimed at aiding decarbonization efforts within industrial sectors.
Construction commenced in September 2025, with operational activities projected to start by 2027. The joint venture features OMV holding a majority stake, while Masdar retains a 49 percent interest. This collaboration capitalizes on OMV’s extensive industrial experience paired with Masdar’s financial and technical acumen in global renewable energy initiatives.
Furthermore, OMV will supply the renewable electricity necessary for hydrogen production, maintaining ownership over the produced output, which builds upon its existing 10 MW green hydrogen facility in Schwechat. This project also paves the way for exploring future sustainable ventures, including synthetic chemicals and aviation fuels, as well as broader green hydrogen prospects throughout Europe and the UAE.
The partnership showcases an increasing commitment to energy transition, aiming to deliver scalable solutions for challenging-to-decarbonize sectors while bolstering the hydrogen economy in Europe. With the joint venture set to complete necessary approvals and documentation by early 2026, this project promises to be a considerable investment in Austria’s renewable energy infrastructure and the larger European renewable industry.
