A bomb detonated inside a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuring numerous others during evening prayers. The blast occurred when the mosque was teeming with worshippers, leading to severe injuries and panic among the attendees.
The incident unfolded in the bustling Gamboru Market area, known for its high foot traffic. According to law enforcement sources, approximately 35 individuals suffered injuries from the explosion, with some listed in serious or critical condition. Emergency teams promptly transported those injured to local hospitals for essential medical care.
In the wake of the explosion, security personnel swiftly sealed off the vicinity to prevent additional harm and facilitate the safe operation of rescue services. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of disaster, with loud cries resonating through the air as dust and smoke enveloped the area, causing distress among nearby residents and traders.
Unverified footage shared on social platforms reportedly captured the aftermath, highlighting destroyed structures, debris-littered streets, and the stunned expressions of witnesses amidst the smoky haze. Officials have cautioned the public against disseminating unverified videos while efforts to investigate the situation are underway.
As of now, no organization has taken responsibility for this attack. However, the region has been plagued by similar violent acts in the past. Armed militant groups in north-eastern Nigeria have often targeted places of worship, markets, and other crowded venues using explosives and suicide bombers.
Maiduguri has been at the heart of a prolonged insurgency led by the extremist group Boko Haram and its affiliate, the Islamic State West Africa Province. This conflict, which began in 2009, has seen the group waging a violent campaign aimed at establishing an Islamic state in Borno state.
Despite extensive military efforts and heightened security measures, attacks against civilians in the region remain a grim reality. In light of the recent bombing, security protocols have been intensified throughout Maiduguri, especially in proximity to mosques and markets. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain those responsible and mitigate further risks, as residents grapple with the continuing threat of insecurity.
