Madhuri Dixit Advocates for Flexible Work Hours for Actors

Post by : Mara Collins

Bollywood legend Madhuri Dixit voiced her thoughts on the current discussion surrounding the implementation of standardized 8-hour work shifts for actors. She believes that every actor deserves the liberty to decide how to achieve a balance between their work and personal life. This conversation gained traction after Deepika Padukone's reported request for 8-hour shifts led to her withdrawal from the upcoming film 'Spirit', directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and featuring Prabhas.

Madhuri, who has been a prominent figure in Bollywood for many years, shared her experiences of juggling demanding shoot schedules while nurturing her family. She remarked that the decision regarding work hours should be left to individual preference. Reflecting on her time working on the film 'Mrs Deshpande', she noted that she often clocked in 12-hour workdays or longer. Madhuri, who identifies as a workaholic, expressed her enjoyment of extended hours but stressed the importance of respecting others’ choices. She stated, “If a woman is empowered to say, ‘I wish to work these specific hours,’ then that should be her choice, and that is her life.”

Madhuri underscored that actors shouldn’t be compelled to adopt a conventional work routine. Her insights accentuate the necessity for flexibility in the movie realm. She believes work hours should be crafted around personal choices and mutual agreements between actors and their producers. This perspective has ignited discussions among industry insiders on whether structured schedules are essential or if individual preferences should take precedence.

Earlier, Rani Mukerji also weighed in on the subject of flexible working conditions in Bollywood. She noted that traditional schedules have relied on mutual understanding between actors and producers. Rani mentioned, “These conversations are more prevalent today, perhaps because people are talking about it outside. However, this has always been the case in all professions. If the producer is comfortable with it, the film progresses. If not, it doesn’t. No one is imposing anything on anyone.” Madhuri's viewpoint resonates with Rani’s, championing the autonomy of actors to dictate their work-life balance.

Madhuri Dixit remains a highly respected figure in Bollywood. She gained widespread acclaim through hits such as 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!', and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. Her performances in films like 'Prem Pratigyaa', 'Parinda', 'Mrityudand', 'Pukar', and 'Lajja' were also met with critical praise. Her role as Chandramukhi in 'Devdas' garnered her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Today, Madhuri continues to be active in both films and streaming series. She featured in 'Dedh Ishqiya' and the Netflix series 'The Fame Game', in addition to appearances in 'Total Dhamaal' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3'. Her endorsement of flexible working hours showcases her awareness of the industry while understanding the personal needs of actors. By promoting freedom and choice, Madhuri contributes significantly to the ongoing dialogue regarding the improvement of work conditions and work-life balance in Bollywood.
