Liverpool Football Club has officially announced the departure of Aaron Briggs, their set-piece specialist, as the team continues to face challenges in guarding against and capitalizing on set-piece scenarios this season.
Briggs joined the club in July 2024 as a development coach and transitioned to the sole set-piece coach by September, contributing to last season's Premier League victory under manager Arne Slot. Unfortunately, this season has seen the team falter in this critical aspect.
In the ongoing Premier League campaign, Liverpool has allowed 12 set-piece goals—from corners, free-kicks, and throw-ins—making it the highest tally among Europe’s elite leagues. A recent goal from Wolves’ Santiago Bueno highlighted this defensive frailty.
Only West Ham has a worse record from corners, having conceded seven against Liverpool’s tally. Moreover, the Reds share the league's highest count of three goals conceded off throw-ins with Newcastle.
On offense, Liverpool has netted merely three goals from set-pieces this season. Opta statistics reveal that they convert just 2.4 goals per 100 set-piece opportunities, ranking second-lowest in the Premier League, behind Brentford.
Conversely, Liverpool allows an alarming average of 8.2 goals per 100 set-pieces, placing them among the league's worst defenses, only topped by Nottingham Forest.
With a set-piece goal difference of minus nine, Liverpool's record at this point in the season is the lowest in their Premier League history. Manager Arne Slot has remarked on the difficulties, saying, "It’s impossible to achieve a top-four finish with our current set-piece statistics, much less contend for the title."
Despite these difficulties, Liverpool currently holds the fourth spot in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by 10 points, as they gear up for a home match against Leeds United on New Year's Day.
The club thanked Briggs for his service and wished him success in his future ventures.
