Diane Ladd, the celebrated American actress known for her emotional range and three Academy Award nominations, has passed away at the age of 89. Her daughter, actress Laura Dern, confirmed the news in an emotional statement, sharing that Ladd died peacefully at home in California with her by her side.
“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning,” Dern said. “She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created.”
Diane Ladd’s distinguished career spanned six decades across film, television, and theatre. She first rose to national prominence in 1974 with her role as a quick-witted waitress in Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a performance that earned her the first of her three Oscar nominations.
Ladd was later nominated for her roles in Wild at Heart (1990), directed by David Lynch, and Rambling Rose (1991), in which she acted opposite her real-life daughter, Laura Dern. Their performance in Rambling Rose made them the first mother-daughter duo to receive Academy Award nominations for the same film in the same year, though neither won.
In addition to her film roles, Ladd was a familiar presence on television, appearing in series such as Chinatown, Enlightened, and Kingdom. Her acting legacy continued well into her later years, including a role in the 2022 drama Gigi & Nate, where she played a grandmother — a fitting portrayal for a performer remembered as both a Hollywood veteran and a devoted family figure.
Born Rose Diane Ladner in Mississippi, Ladd began her career in theatre before transitioning to film and TV. She married fellow actor Bruce Dern in 1960, and the couple welcomed two daughters, Laura and Diane Elizabeth. Tragedy struck in 1962 when Diane Elizabeth died in a drowning accident at just 18 months. Ladd later described the loss as something "you never get over."
Her bond with Laura Dern remained one of the defining relationships of her life, both personally and professionally. The pair co-starred in projects like Wild at Heart and Enlightened, and in 2023 co-authored a joint memoir, Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love, inspired by their walks together during Ladd’s recovery from a lung illness.
Despite discouraging her daughter from entering the acting profession due to its pressures, Ladd eventually embraced Laura’s acting journey. “Nobody cares if you put on weight or your chin points when you cry if you're a doctor,” she once said. “But an actress? They care, care, care, care, care.”
Diane Ladd leaves behind a lasting legacy of emotional and diverse performances, a rich filmography, and generations of fans and actors inspired by her craft. She is survived by her daughter Laura Dern and her grandchildren.
