Under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the Design Commission Abu Dhabi (DCAD) is enhancing the city’s reputation as a hub for sustainable luxury, creative production, and design innovation. This effort aims to create a dynamic, future-oriented creative economy influenced by cutting-edge technologies and artificial intelligence.
DCAD is focused on establishing Abu Dhabi as a center for valuable design intellectual property, innovating with UAE-sourced materials and textiles, and fostering talent through international residencies and targeted training programs. Support is garnered from global partnerships and cultural events that underscore Abu Dhabi’s rising role in the global design community.
In line with this vision, the luxury brand Oscar de la Renta will launch a unique caftan in collaboration with DCAD at its upcoming Pre-Spring Collection Preview in Abu Dhabi. This unveiling signifies a pivotal moment in the brand’s regional outreach, showcasing a bespoke piece that embodies the essence of Emirati culture through modern couture.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional Emirati thobe, the caftan pays homage to Abu Dhabi’s rich cultural background and floral motifs. This limited-edition garment is crafted from porcelain flower-printed silk georgette, layered with ivory silk georgette plumetis, and enhanced with intricate three-dimensional floral thread-work appliqué. It merges Oscar de la Renta’s renowned craftsmanship with local artistic influences.
The concept for the caftan was influenced by a 2025 visit to Abu Dhabi from Oscar de la Renta Co-Creative Director Laura Kim. During her stay, Kim delved into local art, architecture, ornamental stone, and traditional Emirati attire, all of which played a significant role in shaping the garment’s design. The resulting piece is a rich blend of heritage and contemporary luxury.
The exclusive caftan will only be available for special order during the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Spring Collection Preview at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi, with private appointments scheduled from January 13 to January 15, 2026.
