Post by : Bianca Hayes

Dubai, UAE – January 2026: DP World has introduced the Dubai Food District, marking a significant transformation and rebranding of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market. This ambitious initiative is set to establish one of the largest and most sophisticated food trade centers globally.

The Dubai Food District will unfold in phases, with the first phase anticipated to commence in 2027. This expansion aims to more than double the existing market size to 29 million square feet, creating a comprehensive hub for diverse food trade. The district is positioned to enhance food supply chains, boost trade capabilities, and promote regional food security.

The innovative hub will unify trade, storage, processing, and distribution into an integrated ecosystem. Key facilities will encompass cold storage, controlled-temperature warehouses, processing units, digital back-office technologies, cash-and-carry options, and a gourmet food hall catering to both businesses and individual consumers.

Initially revealed in July 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this project will broaden its scope beyond fruits and vegetables, incorporating dairy, gourmet foods, staples, and specialty items, further establishing Dubai as an international hub for food trade.

Since its inception in 2004, the Al Aweer Market has supported over 2,500 traders, providing fresh produce across the UAE and surrounding regions. The Dubai Food District aims to enhance Al Aweer’s contribution to the food ecosystem while improving efficiency, diversity, and market responsiveness, thereby mitigating supply chain risks for enterprises.

His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, stated:
"Dubai Food District reinforces Dubai’s position as a leader in food trade by consolidating world-class infrastructure, global connections, and advanced logistics in one space. We empower farmers, producers, and traders to tap into new markets swiftly, efficiently, and sustainably."

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director of DP World GCC, added:
"With global food demand on the rise and supply chains facing challenges, Dubai Food District represents a vital investment. It will foster innovation driven by trade and generate lasting economic benefits."

The strategic site of the district offers multimodal connectivity, linking producers and traders to over 20 international markets via DP World’s logistics network. The infrastructure is engineered to ensure supply chains are agile, secure, and cost-efficient, facilitating broader market access for businesses of varying scales.

DP World will showcase the Dubai Food District at Gulfood 2026, located at Gulfood Fresh and Logistics, North Hall 12, stand GG.H2.
