Cyberattack Disrupts French Postal Service Ahead of Holidays

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a critical blow to France’s holiday logistics, La Poste, the national postal service, faced a significant cyberattack just prior to Christmas, causing severe delays in parcel deliveries and online banking services at one of the busiest times of the year.

On Wednesday, French prosecutors revealed that the hacking group Noname057 claimed responsibility for the assault, which targeted Western entities perceived as supportive of Ukraine. The investigation has since moved to France’s domestic intelligence agency, DGSI, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The attack, which began on Monday, involved a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assault that inundated La Poste’s central computer systems. Consequently, postal workers were unable to track packages, while customers encountered significant disturbances in online transactions and services provided by La Poste’s banking arm. By Wednesday morning, officials reported that systems were still not fully functional.

La Poste, managing approximately 2.6 billion parcels each year and employing over 200,000 individuals nationwide, faced an unfortunate setback just as delivery volumes peaked for the holiday season. This outage affected millions of customers reliant on their services during this crucial period.

Authorities noted that Noname057 has a history of cyberattacks across Europe, including disruptions during a NATO summit in the Netherlands and assaults on French government websites. Earlier this year, the group was also a target of a coordinated European law enforcement initiative.

This incident raises alarms in France and other European nations regarding an alleged campaign of "hybrid warfare" linked to Russia, characterized by cyberattacks, disinformation, and sabotage intended to diminish Western backing for Ukraine.

Investigations led by the Associated Press document over 145 similar incidents across Europe, posing challenges to law enforcement and security resources.

As the investigation progresses, French authorities are committed to evaluating the attack's impact and enhancing safeguards for critical infrastructure.
