Kyrgyzstan's New Initiative to Foster SME Growth

A high-profile meeting aimed at enhancing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) was convened in Bishkek, underscoring the government's dedication to fortifying the nation’s economic framework. Hosted at the Presidential Administration, the gathering included officials, financial entities, and policy advisors.

Adylbek Kasymaliev, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration, led the session. He underscored the vital role SMEs play in stimulating economic growth and creating job opportunities throughout Kyrgyzstan.

Participants noted that over the past three years, the contribution of SMEs to the national GDP has surged from 40 percent to 51 percent, indicating a promising trend in economic vitality and reflecting the growing significance of entrepreneurship.

Kasymaliev emphasized the need for development funds to give precedence to projects in rural regions, where opportunities are more sparse. Supporting local business owners and facilitating project launches could lead to more equitable regional growth and better living conditions, he stressed.

The assembled officials also evaluated a draft plan aimed at bolstering SMEs through 2030. It proposes enhancing access to funding through favorable loan programs, interest support, and risk-reducing guarantees to aid businesses.

Moreover, the initiative aims to cultivate entrepreneurial skills via training, mentorship, and acceleration programs, all intended to fortify entrepreneurs’ abilities and ensure the sustainability of their businesses for the long term.

Following the meeting, various directives were dispatched to governmental bodies to expedite the approval and execution of the SME growth program. Officials anticipate that these measures will cultivate a robust business climate and drive further economic advancement in the years ahead.
