Kyrgyzstan is advancing its initiatives to bolster water management and irrigation infrastructure, having held pivotal discussions with World Bank and International Development Association officials. These talks aimed at drawing significant investment into the nation’s water sector to enhance agriculture, infrastructure, and food security.
The meeting featured Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, who addressed numerous strategic projects focused on improving irrigation and optimizing water resource utilization nationwide.
Among the central topics was the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program, which seeks around 193 million US dollars in funding. This investment is intended to modernize irrigation systems, enhance water supplies, and promote agricultural productivity across various regions.
Government officials emphasized that this investment initiative is crucial to Kyrgyzstan’s long-term economic and agricultural goals. They argue that modern irrigation is vital for boosting crop output, aiding rural communities, and ensuring national food security in light of climate variability.
The dialogue also covered two significant regional irrigation initiatives. Plans were reviewed to draft technical documents for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in Naryn Region and the Chon Talas Canal across Talas Region.
Approximately 650,000 US dollars in grant funding is set aside for these technical preparations. These projects aim to enhance irrigation capacity in key agricultural regions that heavily depend on consistent water supplies for farming and local economic enhancement.
Representatives from the World Bank and the International Development Association voiced strong support for Kyrgyzstan's modernization efforts in water infrastructure. The discussions also focused on enhancing collaboration to ensure future investments are both effectively executed and sustainable.
At the end of the meeting, Erlist Akunbekov, along with World Bank representatives, signed agreements detailing the outcomes of the discussions and future cooperation plans, marking a significant milestone in Kyrgyzstan’s drive to attract international financial support for its infrastructure and agriculture initiatives.
