Kyiv Under Fire as Zelensky and Trump Prepare for Peace Talks

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia launched missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and various regions across Ukraine early Saturday morning. This surge in aggression coincides with imminent diplomatic discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.

Ukrainians reported multiple explosions in the capital as air defense systems intercepted incoming threats. The Ukrainian military confirmed that Russian forces targeted Kyiv along with several regions in the north and south. Residents remained on high alert as air raid sirens blared for hours, but authorities stated that initial reports indicated no severe damage or power outages.

These attacks occurred just as Zelensky geared up for talks in Florida with Trump, which he underscored as crucial for charting a potential exit strategy to the ongoing conflict that ignited with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. This war has evolved into Europe’s deadliest since World War II.

Zelensky revealed that discussions would hone in on territorial issues following a potential ceasefire, a sticking point in the negotiations. He mentioned that a US-supported 20-point peace plan was nearing completion and that a separate security agreement with Washington was approaching finalization, viewing robust security guarantees as vital to deter future hostilities.             

Trump emphasized that the United States was leading the peace dialogue and indicated that no agreement would be reached without his endorsement. He also shared his optimism about the talks, expressing plans to connect with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly.

Territory poses a significant challenge; Russia insists on Ukraine’s retreat from parts of the Donetsk region, while Kyiv demands that any ceasefire solidifies the current frontlines. The control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility, Europe’s largest, further complicates negotiations.

One potential compromise involves establishing a free economic zone if Ukraine agrees to concede specific territories, yet critical details remain unresolved. Zelensky suggested that a national referendum on the peace plan might occur if international backing wanes, contingent on Russia agreeing to a temporary ceasefire.

While Russia has yet to issue a formal comment on these recent strikes, senior officials in Moscow have hinted at ongoing discussions with US figures, suggesting negotiations could be entering a pivotal phase, despite continued clashes on the battlefield.
