A 34-year-old individual has been sentenced to 11 months behind bars following an attempted robbery of a woman in the parking lot of Columbia Asia Hospital Bukit Jalil. This incident, occurring during daylight hours, raised alarms regarding public safety in the vicinity of busy hospitals in Kuala Lumpur.
The Kuala Lumpur police reported that the robbery attempt transpired at approximately 11:30am on May 18. The assailant allegedly approached a 26-year-old woman while she was seated in her vehicle within the hospital parking premises. According to officials, the man forcefully opened the car door, trying to grab her mobile phone before attempting to flee with her handbag.
A confrontation ensued as the victim fought back, calling out for assistance. Authorities detailed that the suspect ultimately escaped on a motorcycle without managing to steal anything of value. Luckily, no property was taken during this alarming episode.
Cheras police chief Mohd Rosdi Daud indicated that the D9 Serious Crimes Investigation Division promptly commenced an operation post-incident. The suspect was subsequently apprehended in the Brickfields area around 5:36pm the very same day.
Upon further inquiry, it emerged that the man had an extensive criminal record, boasting 11 prior offenses. Law enforcement also confiscated various items believed to be linked to the attempted robbery, including a motorcycle, a helmet, and a jacket tied to the offender.
The police confirmed that charges were laid under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery. After pleading guilty, the individual was sentenced to 11 months in prison. Officials characterized the quick arrest as a testament to effective police work and community involvement.
This incident has reignited discussions regarding personal safety in parking areas, particularly within populous urban confines. Authorities are advising the public to stay vigilant, to steer clear of isolated parking spots when possible, and to report any dubious behavior to the authorities immediately.
