Kuala Lumpur Protects More Green Spaces for Future Generations

Hannah Yeoh has revealed that 45 new green and open spaces in Kuala Lumpur have received official gazettement, raising the total to 539 protected areas. This initiative aims to safeguard urban green environments for community use and ecological health.

The newly recognized areas cover roughly 277,663 square meters—almost the size of 39 football fields. These designated spaces will now be permanently allocated for public enjoyment, preventing any future developmental encroachments.

Yeoh highlighted that this initiative showcases the government's commitment to preserving public green areas for families and coming generations. A dedicated task force is actively working to identify and secure more green zones throughout the capital.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud added that this initiative is a crucial part of transforming the city into a “sponge city,” a concept focusing on enhancing water absorption, mitigating flood risks, and managing urban heat through expanded green cover.

This announcement follows a significant effort back in February 2021, when nearly 500 green spaces were also gazetted. Authorities indicate that the evaluation process is ongoing, with additional areas under consideration for future inclusion.

Officials emphasized transparency, stating that details about all gazetted locations will be made accessible online. This initiative intends to keep residents informed and ensure accountability in urban planning practices.
