Kim Ju Ae, the young daughter of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, made her debut public appearance at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on January 1, as reported by state media. She was seen with her parents, Kim Jong Un and Ri Sol Ju, during the ceremonial visit to pay respects to former leaders, namely her grandfather, Kim Jong Il, and great-grandfather, Kim Il Sung.
The Kumsusan Palace of the Sun holds immense significance, serving as the resting place for the nation’s past leaders. The presence of Ju Ae at this prestigious site indicates her increasing visibility within the political sphere. Observers suggest this may be a strategic move to prepare her for a prominent role in North Korea's future.
Over the recent years, Ju Ae has been more frequently featured in North Korean media, raising speculation among analysts and South Korean intelligence that she could be groomed for the role of the fourth-generation leader. However, she remains without an official title, and while her exact age isn’t publicly disclosed, she is thought to have been born in the early 2010s.
Photos captured during the visit depict Ju Ae standing between her parents in the main hall of the mausoleum. Experts like Hong Min from the Korea Institute for National Unification argue that North Korea aims to project an image of familial unity and dynastic succession through such public displays.
Ju Ae also participated in New Year festivities and traveled to Beijing with her father last September, marking her first overseas public appearance. Analysts believe these orchestrated events are designed to gradually prepare her for significant responsibilities ahead, possibly underscored during the forthcoming ruling party Congress.
However, officials from South Korea's Unification Ministry have voiced caution, asserting that it might be premature to consider Ju Ae as a potential successor given her youth and lack of official party membership. Furthermore, experts note that Kim Jong Un may have other children whose roles could also impact the plans for succession.
This visit underscores North Korea’s emphasis on familial leadership and the significance of dynastic ideals. While the exact nature of her future role remains unclear, Kim Ju Ae's public appearances represent a notable step in her gradual introduction to both national and international audiences.
