North Korea's Kim Jong Un Pushes for Missile Production Surge and Submarine Development

Post by : Mina Carter

In a decisive move, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has mandated a significant increase in missile and artillery shell production, highlighting a renewed commitment to bolstering the nation’s military strength. Alongside this initiative, Kim has directed officials to establish new factories to satisfy the rising demands of North Korea’s military forces.

During his recent visits to munitions facilities, Kim underscored the essential role that missile and artillery manufacturing plays in reinforcing the country’s defense posture. He urged these plants to prepare for an active and productive year, focusing on scaling up production to meet military demands.

In a standout moment at a shipyard, Kim closely examined the construction of a sizable, 8,700-ton nuclear submarine intended for launching surface-to-air missiles. This development signifies a considerable advancement in North Korea’s naval power. Images from the visit showcased the submarine’s deep burgundy hull within the assembly area, marking the first clear visuals released this year. Analysts observe that the submarine features a nuclear reactor and is close to becoming operational.

During the inspection, Kim cautioned that South Korea’s ambitions to create its own nuclear submarines could destabilize the region further, deeming these initiatives a direct threat to North Korea’s security interests. This warning follows the South Korean president requesting U.S. support for nuclear submarine technology, igniting tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Alongside factory inspections and submarine evaluations, Kim also oversaw a test launch of new high-altitude and long-range anti-air missiles over the Sea of Japan. These missiles are part of North Korea’s overall strategy to update and enhance its defense systems. Kim announced that additional modernization and production initiatives would be revealed at the forthcoming Korean Workers Party congress early next year.

Analysts contend that these advancements reflect North Korea’s goal to improve its precision strike capabilities, potentially applying pressure on both the United States and South Korea. The recent missile tests and production escalations may also signal intentions to export sophisticated weaponry to Russia.

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago, ties between Pyongyang and Moscow have strengthened. North Korea has reportedly offered Russia troops, artillery, missiles, and rockets under a mutual defense agreement established between Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In exchange, Russia has provided North Korea with financial assistance, military tech, and essential supplies including food and energy.

Experts suggest that North Korea may pursue further advanced military technologies from Russia, such as those related to nuclear submarines and fighter jets, thus deepening their strategic partnership.
