PSLV-C62 Mission Stumbles, Yet KID Capsule Returns Valuable Data

Achieving remarkable feats often requires a spirit of determination akin to that of a child. The KID capsule, a small payload on the PSLV-C62 launch, exemplified that spirit of resilience.

While the PSLV mission was deemed unsuccessful, leading to the assumption that most onboard satellites, including a crucial surveillance satellite, had been lost, the KID capsule unexpectedly separated and successfully transmitted vital data back home.

This milestone is particularly significant for the team behind KID, focused on enhancing efficiency and affordability in space travel and cargo returns. Their ambition is to create capsules capable of safely returning cargo from space to Earth, enduring the extreme conditions of atmospheric re-entry.

KID acted as a technology demonstration and a prototype for their forthcoming vehicle, designed to transport up to 120 kilograms of payload back to Earth from orbit.

The PSLV-C62 rocket launched smoothly from its site. However, challenges arose during the third stage of the flight, where unexpected disturbances detected during the operation of the rocket’s strap-on motors ultimately led to mission failure, resulting in the loss of most payloads.

Among the lost satellites was a vital earth observation satellite aimed at supporting defense operations by monitoring adversary movements and actions. The flight also included satellites developed by private entities, a dedicated tanker satellite, and student-created payloads.

Even with the setback from the mission’s failure, the separation of the KID capsule and its data transmission highlights a promising outlook for future space endeavors and cargo retrieval missions.
