Post by : Bianca Hayes

On Tuesday night, Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir experienced a significant avalanche, burying homes and vehicles in the Sarbal area. Officials have reported that, remarkably, there were no casualties or injuries despite the avalanche's severity.

The event occurred at approximately 10:12 pm, as a massive surge of snow descended from the mountains, engulfing nearby buildings including hotels. CCTV footage documented the moment the avalanche hit, showcasing the powerful nature of the snowstorm.

Authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities, despite a high-intensity avalanche warning that had been issued on Monday due to ongoing heavy snowfall in the region.

The fresh snowfall on Tuesday also contributed to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and prompted the cancellation of all flights at the Srinagar airport, stranding hundreds of travelers.

Traffic on National Highway 44 was halted as significant snow accumulation occurred near the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund and Banihal, rendering the route unsafe. Due to the continuous snow, all 58 flights (29 arrivals and 29 departures) scheduled at Srinagar International Airport were also canceled, impacting numerous passengers.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have advised both residents and tourists to remain cautious in areas prone to avalanches.
